With more than two-thirds of the 2026 SSE Airtricity Premier Division season completed, Shamrock Rovers are in a strong position. The defending champions have 54 points from 27 matches, seven more than St Patrick’s Athletic and ten ahead of Bohemians.
The closing weeks are also bringing more attention to title projections and sports markets. The main problem has been draws. At this stage, taking one point while Rovers collect three makes the gap increasingly difficult to close.
Two or three strong rounds for St Patrick’s, combined with dropped points by Rovers, could still change the picture. Such a sequence would also affect title markets, particularly if the seven-point advantage fell to only a few points.
Bohemians Can Still Influence the Race
Bohemians sit third with 44 points, ten behind the leaders. The Gypsies have produced strong performances against difficult opponents, although defensive mistakes have cost them points.
A serious title challenge would require an almost perfect run and dropped points from both teams above them. Even so, Bohemians remain important to the race for the leading positions and can still affect the title battle through direct meetings.
Dundalk, Shelbourne and Derry City Could Have an Impact
Dundalk have 37 points and have looked competitive since returning to the top flight. Shelbourne remain close to the European places and have appeared with a game in hand in some recent tables. Derry City have collected too many draws, limiting their progress.
Several factors could change the standings:
- direct meetings between teams near the top;
- home form and points dropped against mid-table opponents;
- squad depth and rotation;
- injuries during congested periods;
- the ability of St Patrick’s and Bohemians to turn draws into wins.
These clubs are closer to the European race, but points taken from Rovers or St Patrick’s could still influence the title. European qualification markets may also react faster because the gaps between those teams are smaller.
Seven Points Can Still Disappear
The season runs until the end of October, so there is still time for form to change.
